Drywall Repair & Patching

Drywall repair is the most common call we get from Columbus homeowners, and it covers a wide range of problems. A doorknob punches through a hallway wall. Settling opens a crack above a bedroom door. A slow roof or plumbing leak darkens a ceiling and softens the gypsum. Nail pops ring out across a wall as the house shifts. Each one looks small, but each one needs to be cut out, refastened, and finished flat so it disappears under paint.

The process starts with diagnosis. Before any patch goes up, we figure out what caused the damage. A crack above a doorframe usually means normal settling. A stained ceiling means a leak above it that has to be fixed first. Water damage in particular has to be handled honestly. If the framing or insulation behind the drywall is still wet, closing it back up traps moisture and the problem returns. We cut out the damaged section cleanly, check the cavity behind it, and let it dry before new board goes up.

Once the cause is sorted, the repair itself follows the same steps every time. We cut a clean, square opening back to the studs, fit a new piece of drywall snug, and screw it off. We tape the seams, apply mud in coats, and sand between them until the patch is flush. For holes too small to justify a full patch, we back the repair with a scrap of wood or a repair clip so the new material has something to bite. The goal is a surface that's flat to the touch and flat under a raking light.

Texture is where a repair either disappears or announces itself. Columbus homes carry everything from smooth walls to knockdown, orange peel, and hand-troweled finishes. We match what's there, testing the texture on a board first, then feathering the edges of the patch into the surrounding surface so the blend reads as one continuous wall. A patch that's flat but textured wrong is visible forever, no matter how well it's painted.

Nail pops get their own treatment. We reset the fastener, add screws above and below the pop to lock the board to the stud, and mud over the lot. Cracks around windows and doors get a layer of paper or mesh tape embedded in the mud so the movement doesn't telegraph back through. Anchor points for TVs, shelves, and grab bars get cut open, backed, and patched so the wall holds the weight the next time.

When we're done, we contain the dust, protect your floors, and clean up, including vacuuming horizontal surfaces and vents.
